Deep Zoom, HD View, and Image Composite Editor are all, as far as I can make out, currently out of Microsoft Research and associates.

Deep Zoom

 Deep Zoom is currently, at time of writing, badged as Microsoft Silverlight Deep Zoom.

On the Deep Zoom web site there are some case studies, one of which is about the Hard Rock Cafe Memorabilia. This was the site that inspired me when I found out about Deep Zoom a couple of years ago. In the latest version of the site based on Silverlight 2, there is a function to be able to embed an extract of the site, a particular item of memorabilia from one of the Hard Rock Cafes around the world. Below is an example, a letter from Paul McCartney. Take a look at the stamp.

Not the stamps with the queens head on, but the overlaid one on the left hand side. Impressed?

If you followed the link to the original site you would have been able to continue zooming in on the stamp until you found a framed set of Beatle's bobbing head dolls. Good luck.

I have been using Deep Zoom Composer for a while to construct the core of an image composition. For more about my early experiences and a sample, follow the link to the mixed sample 001.

Zoom it is a web service for High and very High resolution images. You provide it with a link to an image on the web and it provides the image with Deep Zoom abilities, and gives a link for you to use. See box out on right for information from the site;

It is very easy to use and performs in the same way as the Deep Zoom collections, but for a single image. The service is an experiment according to the website. It also states that images aren't discoverable, so a link has to be provided for others to see it.

There is a downloadable version Zoomit which states;

ZoomIt is a screen zoom and annotation tool for technical presentations that include application demonstrations. ZoomIt runs unobtrusively in the tray and activates with customizable hotkeys to zoom in on an area of the screen, move around while zoomed, and draw on the zoomed image. I wrote ZoomIt to fit my specific needs and use it in all my presentations.

Below are a few examples of Some of these images a over 27Mb, which would normally take an age to load if used on a website, especially with half a dozen at the same time.

My first attempt, a failure.

Quotes from related websites

From the Deep Zoom website.

Silverlight Deep Zoom is the fastest, smoothest, zooming technology on the Web, bringing the highest resolution images and frame rates with the lowest load times to users. Deep Zoom also enables the display of thousands of items simultaneously, giving designers and developers new opportunities to create innovative navigation paradigms for both applications and the Web.
By optimizing the way images are stored and intelligently downloading only the pieces of information needed to fill the screen, Deep Zoom removes technical barriers and enables the delivery of engaging customer and content-centric experiences.

Deep Zoom Composer

Deep Zoom Composer, a tool to allow the preparation of images for use with the Deep Zoom feature in Silverlight 3. The new Deep Zoom technology in Silverlight allows users to see images on the Web like they never have before. The smooth in-place zooming and panning that Deep Zoom allows is a true advancement and raises the bar on what image viewing should be. High resolution images need to be prepared for use with Deep Zoom and this tool allows the user to create Deep Zoom composition files that control the zooming experience and then export all the necessary files for deployment with Silverlight 3.

From the Website;

What this is is a free service for viewing and sharing high-resolution imagery. You give us the link to any image on the web, and we give you a beautiful new way to experience it — along with a nice short URL.

How it works converts your image to the Deep Zoom format, which lets you smoothly and efficiently explore the whole image, no matter how large. Check out Deep Zoom Studio for examples of this technology in action. runs on Windows Azure and enhances the experience with Microsoft Silverlight when available.

Why we made it

We think every image on the web should be a beautiful, high-resolution one. gets us one step closer to that vision, and Deep Zoom keeps the experience fast and buttery smooth.
