  • SmugMug Pro ---- Adopted as primary Photo Gallery
    20th Jan 2013
In just one weekend I managed to set up SmugMug ready for use!

Compare this with my previous attempts to get a easy to use Photo Gallery up and running. Help desk conversations with 123-reg, my normal hosting service between 14th Sept 2012 to Dec 2012, without resolution. Eventually my extra money refunded.  Progress  at SmugMug has been phenomenally quick which is a testament to the site and those that operate it. A few more things to test out but currently, to use the vernacular, I am well happy.
  • SmugMug Pro ---- Added to navigation of Just Photography site
    19th Jan 2013
Impressed enough to add SmugMug to navigation

Progress has been phenomenally quick. Less than a weekend. The SmugMug web site is sufficiently setup to have its own link in the navigation dropdown. All the other galleries, bar one, have been relegated to old.
  • SmugMug Pro ---- Connect to Lightroom
    19th Jan 2013
    Plugin to Lightroom installed

I use Lightroom as my main Photo Catalogue. SmugMug has developed a Lightroom Plug-in, with installation instructions that are easy to follow. I installed the Plug-in into Lightroom without difficulty. It works really well with the ability to create categories and galleries with in SmugMug, including basic gallery configuration, directly from within Lightroom. Also you can configure the sync the photos so that if, for instance you change keywords, or add map GPS data to a photo in Lightroom, it offers to re-publish it to SmugMug. I found this Plug-in to be very effective and practicle.
  • SmugMug Pro ---- Does what it says on the tin.
    19th Jan 2013
    Lets build a web site

Sign on and upload some photos and I have a working web site. How easy is that!! Now for the configuration to make it mine. The basic set up has an Easy Customizer which allows  you to amend a lot of the basic stuff without any reference to code.  It is simple to set up a banner such as 'Ivan Hurst Photography' or and image. The the navigation so that the core site has more than just the home page. Then it was into the Advanced Customizer which does allow the addition of some code into specific areas of the web site structure. There are a number of training videos and help pages to get you this far. Here are some examples; With thanks to all who have contributed to the tutorials and forums.
  • SmugMug Pro ---- Started Free Trial
    18th Jan 2013
    Impressed so started free trial

Heavy snow disrupted train services so I worked from home. This gave me the opportunity to get 'home' early, (No travel), and explore the SmugMug site and offering from home rather than on the train. I was impressed so signed up to the free 14 day trial. I would then have the weekend to play with it.
  • SmugMug Pro ---- Eureka!!!
    17th Jan 2013
Bumped into a different Photo Hosting site.

One of the web sites in my interesting Links is Tickled Pixels . I was having another look at his site and found a referral to his hosting site, SmugMug.
  • Pivot View
    29th Dec 2012
Started development of new Pivot View for Just Photography site

Pivot View is a very interesting way of showing and manipulating data, particularly images. I am trying to learn how to use it and create the necessary code so that I can incorporate the technology into this web site. See ScotGu's blog for some history, or this one for World Cup info. I suspect it will take quite a while for me the learn how to get it as interactive as I would like. Please keep popping back to check on progress.

  • Hosting difficulties -- Gallery 3
    20 Sept 2012 to 29 Nov 2012 - 70 days
Following my decision not to use Gallery Server Pro I explored the alternative free apps available with 123-reg

Gallery 3 Is one of the Photo Albums offered as a free app by 123-reg to support web-hosting. I had the following exchange with 123-reg support team.
This is not, nor is it intended to be a full transcript. Names have been removed together with some of the automated and repetitive pleasantries and salutations. Just to cut down on some of the repetition. Apologies in advance, it is a long thread. It is also the only support call to 123-reg where I have felt totally dissatisfied with the product and the service. The problem was not resolved by the end of the ticket, and remains so at the time of writing.

I started support request with a live chat.
    • 20.9.2012. 13:42

      Dear Ivan,
Thank you for contacting 123-reg on the 20th September 2012.
I have changed the permissions on your used pictures to 755 and your website is displaying the pictures correctly.
Please make sure the next time when you upload pictures that you have set the proper permissions.

      Dear Ivan,
Thank you for contacting 123-reg on the 20th September 2012.
We really appreciate your positive feedback and would love to hear more about your recent experience of our service. If you have a moment it would be great if you could write us a quick review and rating here ______
    • 20.9.2012. 14:33
Hi, I have found permissions in the application.
      It has this message
Oh no! Your server needs a configuration change in order for you to hide photos! Ask your server administrator to enable mod_rewrite and set AllowOverride FileInfo Options to fix this.
I can see three thumbnails out of seven, but not the enlargement, full size or slideshow.
The permissions in the application is to hide the photos, so it assumes they are visible be default.
Is there somewhere else to change permissions?
I assume that the permissions do not need to be changed for each photo or each import.
    • 20.9.2012. 14:50
      Dear Ivan,
Thank you for contacting 123-reg on the 20th September 2012.
We have escalated your issue to our technical engineers to investigate. As soon as we have information on resolving this issue your support ticket will be updated.
We apologize for any delay this may cause you.
    • 20.9.2012. 15:31
      Dear Ivan,
Thank you for contacting 123-reg on the 20th September 2012.
Unfortunately you will need to contact your web developer to enable mod_rewrite and set AllowOverride FileInfo Options trough a .htaccess file.
    • 20.9.2012. 17:20
      Hi,
      II am becoming confused.
      Previously you wrote;
I have changed the permissions on your used pictures to 755 and your website is displaying the pictures correctly.
Please make sure the next time when you upload pictures that you have set the proper permissions.
So somewhere it is easy to change the permissions. It appears that this should sort the problem.
Please remember that this is an application that 123-reg include in their web hosting package. I assume it works together. If I am doing something wrong I would like to know what it is and how I can cure it. However, I think photos showing up in a photo gallery is fairly fundamental.
The product appears not to be working correctly at the moment. It has only just been installed. Are the installation scripts correct? Is the Apache version correct for the product?
    • 20.9.2012. 18:17
      Dear Ivan,
Thank you for contacting 123-reg on the 20th September 2012.
Our engineers advised that in order to fix the permissions problem you need to enable through a .htaccess file mod_rewrite and set AllowOverride FileInfo Options. If you do not know how to do this, you can search online to see how you fix this or ask a webdesigner to help you.
    • 20.9.2012. 18:24
      Thanks,
So to confirm my understanding of your advise, your product offered as part of your web hosting does not work !
    • 20.9.2012. 18:39
      Dear Ivan,
Thank you for contacting 123-reg on the 20th September 2012.
The mod_rewrite option is enabled on the hosting server. When the application has been installed the .htaccess file may have not been installed correctly. The issue you are encountering can simply be fixed through a .htaccess file that you have in your application and insert a few parts of code to fix the issue.
Here is a link that may explain what you need to do:
      http://wordpress.org/support/topic/how-to-check-if-allowoverride-fileinfo-options-in-vhost-is-set-to-all
    • 21.9.2012. 00:16
      Hi,
I have un-installed and re-installed Gallery to allow it to install correctly. The same problem occurs. I have also installed Coppermine. Coppermine works but the file sizes are limited to 1mb, which is too small for a photo gallery.
      I have added
      Directory
      AllowOverride All
      Directory
to the .htaccess file but that just created a 500 or 550 error.
      so I renamed it .htaccess.txt
IIf I make gallery the default / home page it will write a new .htaccess file. Would that be the home page of photography.ivanhurst.me.uk or ivanhurst.me.uk. Ie the sub-domain or the domain?
    • 21.9.2012. 00:23
      Hi,
Which Apache HTTP Server Version are you using?

      Dear Ivan,
Thank you for contacting 123-reg on the 21st September 2012.
You can also search online for different ways to update the .htaccess file to set AllowOverride FileInfo Options for your application.

      Dear Ivan,
Thank you for contacting 123-reg on the 21st September 2012.
I can confirm that the Apache version we have is 2.2.

    • 21.9.2012. 10:15
Thanks, that is another possible reason eliminated.
So back to the original fault, why will Gallery not install straight out of the box?
YYour advert states that it easy. This is not easy. I have not done any special configuration to the site to make it different.

      Hi,
Excellent, thank you. The domain ivanhurst.me.uk and its sub-domains appear to be working OK. That is all of the pages I have looked at are OK.
So, back to the original problem. See
      http://photography.ivanhurst.me.uk/gallery/
I have installed one of your apps, Gallery, twice now. I have also installed Coppermine.
      http://www.photography.ivanhurst.me.uk/coppermine/
On Coppermine the images show up, but on Gallery they are just placeholders.
II have not 'played' with the environment to make is special or different prior to installation.
Hoping for a resolution soon. Do other users of Gallery on 123-reg have as many problems?
Only one more and this thread with have it silver anniversary
    • 22.9.2012. 15:13
      Dear Ivan,
Thank you for contacting 123-reg on the 21st September 2012.
This was a permission issue, you should have all the images with the permission: 755
I have set this for you, however you have some missing files on your hosting account such as: DSCN1415.jpeg or DSCN1414.jpeg
Please ensure you have all the files uploaded to hosting.
Also before trying to access again the domain name, please clear your browser's history or use another browser to access it.
    • 22.9.2012. 15:33
      Thanks,
'I should have all the images with the permission: 755' How do I do this please?
    • 22.9.2012. 15:38
      Dear Ivan,
Thank you for contacting 123-reg on the 22nd September 2012.
This means, you should use FileZilla for doing this:
      http://www.123-reg.co.uk/support/answers/Hosting/FTP-Management-and-Uploading-your-Website/how-can-i-upload-my-website-using-ftp-370/
After you have connected to your hosting with FileZilla, right click on a file-Change permissions- type '755' and click on Apply.
This will set the permission for your image.
To do this recursively in a folder, just tick a box Apply to all files and subfolders and this will be applied.
    • 22.9.2012. 16:06
      Thanks,
BBearing in mind that the images are loaded by Gallery 3, and it handles user groups with different permissions, how does changing the permissions after uploading, affect this.
    • 22.9.2012. 16:17
      Dear Ivan,
Thank you for contacting 123-reg on the 22nd September 2012.
This should not affect the groups with different permissions.
In this way you make a photo visible to your live website. Usually the permissions for files are either '644' or '755'.
    • 22.9.2012. 17:04
      Hi,
So, just for me to be fully clear.
I upload the photos in the 123-reg app, Gallery 3. That gets the photo on to the server, and registered in the database. Gallery 3 creates the thumbnails and web images and stores those on the server.
Then I go in the backdoor and change the permissions.
This does not seem very efficient.
      Am I correct?
Do all 123-reg users of Gallery 3 have to do this?
    • 24.9.2012. 15:37
      Dear Ivan,
Thank you for contacting 123-reg on the 22nd September 2012.
Please provide the link URL for the image that does not appear on the browser for us to investigate further.
    • 25.9.2012. 12:31
      Dear Ivan,
Thank you for contacting 123-reg on the 22nd September 2012.
If you can please provide the details requested in this ticket I will ask for this matter to be looked into further for you, the team who deal with the shared hosting issues would really need to be able to replicate this in order to progress this issue further.
If we can be of any further help with regard to this or any other matter, please do not hesitate to contact us.
    • 25.9.2012. 13:48
The URL is in the very first post.
This appears to be the start of the third iteration of the circular solution.
There is a lot of information in this string of approximately 30 posts. I suggest it is read in full before the next solution is proposed.
I have uploaded some new photos, to replicate the problem. The URL is
      http://photography.ivanhurst.me.uk/gallery/The-Parade
I do hope we can come to a satisfactory resolution that does not involve going into the file permissions every time I upload some photos.

      Ivan Hurst (9/25/2012 9:46:11 AM):
      Good morning,
I have a ticket open at the moment. I think I have been very patient, but it is about 30 messages long, and is about to launch into its third trip round the same block.
      How can I escalate this?
It is fundamentally a very simple problem.
I have installed Gallery 3, and it does not work properly straight out of the tin.
The suggestion is that after upload of images I go in the backdoor and change the permissions.
      This is not very efficient.
Do I just give up and complete one of your satisfaction surveys?
I have been patient but am now frustrated.
      Regards
      Ivan

      Not resolved
    • 28.11.2012. 23:01
      Hi,
I am not sure why this was closed as the problem is not resolved.
The last message from 123-reg did not appear to require a reply.
I have uploaded some more photos to test if the problem persists, and as of yesterday, it did.
I assume you will continue to work for a solution as stated in the last message from 123-reg.
    • 29.11.2012. 14:20
      Dear Ivan,
Thank you for contacting 123-reg on the 28th November 2012.
I can confirm the issue is being looked into as stated in our previous response, however this is on-going with no fixed date on a resolution. The issue you are facing is not with your account itself but with the application you are using on your hosting package . As all applications we offer are third party, a resolution could take time. At this moment in time the only thing I can advise for an immediate fix is to upgrade to a VPS as that will be able to handle the Gallery application . The Gallery application requires a high number of PHP resources to be run and a Shared hosting package is limited to the number that can be run, where as a VPS is not. In conclusion, if you do not wish to upgrade to a VPS then I would recommend you investigate an alternative application for now.
If we can be of any further help with regard to this or any other matter, please do not hesitate to contact us.
    • 29.11.2012. 15:49
Thanks for the information. This is probably the most helpful in the entire string.
I was beginning to think that I was the only person that had tried the add on.
I do think that if it does not work on shared hosting it should not be offered and advertised.
  • Hosting difficulties -- Gallery 3 and Coppermine
    Sept 2012
Following my decision not to use Gallery Server Pro I explored the alternative free apps available with 123-reg

Gallery 3 and Coppermine are two of the Photo Albums offered as a free apps by 123-reg to support web-hosting. However they are both for Linux web hosting platform. To be able to use this on my Just Photography web site I had to duplicate the template and images for the rolling banner to my photography. sub.site of ivan.hurst.me.uk, which is Linux based. This complicates the management of the site as it jumps from one site to another. The said it was not too difficult to do. Once set up it was then a case of setting up Gallery 3 and Coppermine.

      One moment please.
Named Support Agent (9/19/2012 1:07:57 PM):
The Gallery app is only available for the Linux packages: http://www.123-reg.co.uk/support/answers/123-Apps/Linux-Hosting/123-apps-gallery-1134/
      Ivan Hurst (9/19/2012 1:08:56 PM)
Is it better than Gallery Server Pro? Is it equivalent?
Named Support Agent (9/19/2012 1:10:04 PM):
We recommend using the Linux package for the Gallery apps.
      Ivan Hurst (9/19/2012 1:10:34 PM)
Can I see an example before installing it?
Named Support Agent (9/19/2012 1:10:53 PM):
We don't have any examples unfortunately.
      Ivan Hurst (9/19/2012 1:11:39 PM)
OK, is it freeware the same as Gallery Server Pro?
Named Support Agent (9/19/2012 1:12:21 PM):
The gallery app is included on the Linux hosting packages via 123-Apps.
      Ivan Hurst (9/19/2012 1:15:01 PM)
Yes, as is Gallery Server Pro, but it is from an external provider. Is the Gallery app from an external provider, perhaps, if so, do they have a web site that I could visit?
Named Support Agent (9/19/2012 1:15:59 PM):

  • Hosting difficulties -- Gallery Server Pro
    Sept 2012
Following  problems with the operation and use of Gallery Server Pro I have decided that it does not match my requirements

I will continue with the trial of hosted Photo Albums but cease development with Gallery Server Pro and may eventually remove it from my site.
However, I may leave it as part of this development history

Following the installation problems, I  had difficulties with the operation and use of Gallery Server Pro

Continuing with the trial of hosted Photo Albums I had the following exchange with 123-reg support team.
This is not, nor is it intended to be a full transcript. Names have been removed together with some of the automated and repetitive pleasantries and salutations.

Hi, Gallery Server Pro is now opening, but requires continuous re log-in. I have managed to load some photos, but can’t edit the captions. The size of the database and the number of photos added seems very restricted despite larger file size being in stated in web.config.
Please can you look in the error log which is now large?
This is not how I expected this product to work.

Thank you for contacting 123-reg on the 16th September 2012.
Our engineers have advised that the appropriate changes have been made and this issue should be solved now.
Please test from your end also and confirm if the matter still stands.

      Hi,
Thanks, it is improving. I can now stay logged in, and not have to re-login at every change of page. I can also load more photographs at a time, although some seem to be with errors. However, I am not able to load an AVI file. It produces an error.
      Please look at error log.
Is this a new product to 123-reg?
    • 18.9.2012. 01:24
      Dear Ivan,
Thank you for contacting 123-reg on the 17th September 2012.
Please provide with a screenshot of the error message you receive when uploading AVI formats. This is most likely a codding issue when loading video formats.
The 123-reg apps are a freeware source for customers to use within the hosting package. If there are errors that might occur we have limited support for codding issues.

      Hi,
Did you re-install Gallery Server Pro?
      It opens to the Gallery now, but when I try to log on I get the following message;
      • An error occurred.
We are sorry, but Gallery Server Pro encountered an error. It has been logged and, if error reporting is enabled, an email describing the problem has been sent to the administrator.
If you are an administrator, you can enable the option on the Gallery Settings page to show detailed information when an error occurs. If that screen is unavailable because of this error, you can also see error details by temporarily setting debug="true" in web.config.

  • Published first draft of Just Photography
    13th Sept 2012
First draft published and link provided from main website

Only partly build, with most areas still not working, I published the new Just Photography web site and added a link from my main website. The Just Photos site a link remain operational for the time being. Older news becomes history and is kept below.

  • New Just Photography site
    12th Sept 2012
    Started new Just Photography site

I learnt a lot form my attempts to construct a new travelogue site. This included rolling headers, multiple menus, better template management. I decided to start my Just Photos site again, based on the template I developed for the Travelogue, but less complicated. But the really big difference was the switch to a windows host for the new Just Photography web site. I was trying to add a Deep Zoom example to the travelogue but found out it would not work due to it being hosted in a Linux platform. Hence a new platform and a new domain for Just Photography.
  • Just Photos suspended
    20th July 2012
    Development of Just Photos suspended

I stated to build a new travelogue site (read more about the travelogue website build) and explored different templates. I tried three columns with an expanding middle but settled on two columns with an expanding left side. This experimentation highlighted how restrictive the template for Just Photos was. It was fixed width which means that the content sits in the middle of your screen irrespective of how big it is.
  • Published first draft
    5th May 2012
First draft published and link provided from main website

I considered that the build had progressed sufficiently once the 'External photo sites' was functioning for it to be released to the web. There is still a lot of development to do, but it is functional.
  • Build Started
Created MyPhotoGallery and started to build web site
    1st May 2012
I thought that as photography is such an important hobby to me, and it takes me so long to update my main website or the travelogue with the stories surrounding the photos, I would build a dedicated Photo Gallery.
The idea is to bring all of the various photo and video collections I have into one place. They can be looked at here or by following the links. The back ground stories or information may be found elsewhere. Here it is just the images that matter.
